Born from Syracuse History

In 1959, while fishing on Syracuse Lake, local angler Dick Jamison hooked something strange: what he first thought was just a waterlogged log. When he cleared away the moss and mud, he uncovered an ancient treasure: a 21-foot dugout canoe carved from a single massive tulip poplar tree, blackened by centuries beneath the water.

This wasn’t just any boat. It was hand-hewn by unknown hands (possibly Miami tribes, French fur traders, or the earliest settlers) long before a dam raised the lake’s level in 1834 and sent the canoe to its watery grave. For over a hundred years it rested silently on the lake bottom, a forgotten relic of the people who once paddled these waters.

Today, that very canoe is preserved and displayed at the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum, a powerful symbol of resilience, craftsmanship, and the deep roots of our community.

The Dugout Legends tournament honors that spirit. Just as that tulip-tree canoe carried legends across Syracuse Lake generations ago, today’s players step into the batter’s box to carve their own stories (one swing, one pitch, one legendary moment at a time).
Dugout Legends: Where history meets heart, and new legends are born.
